From AD581-604 China enjoyed its greatest period of prosperity since the Han. From AD605-617 the second Sui emperor enthusiastically followed a policy of advancement. He was, however, far too ambitious in some projects, including reinforcing the Great Wall. The dynasty fell when he was assassinated in AD618.
